San Jose Mexican Restaurant

About

This family-run operation brings regional Mexican cooking to Elgin with the kind of care that comes from recipes passed down rather than corporate playbooks—expect moles simmered for hours, fresh masa pressed daily, and a mezcal selection that reflects someone's actual travels through Oaxaca and beyond. The menu pulls from multiple regions, whether that's Yucatecan preparations, coastal mariscos, or the kind of slow-cooked fondas dishes that require time and technique most chains won't bother with. You're eating the work of people who understand that Mexican cuisine isn't one monolithic thing, but a country's worth of distinct traditions.
